ASPA 2022 Physical Activity in Healthcare SIG Session

Physical Activity in Healthcare SIG launch

Tuesday 29th November 1150 – 1250 hours

The Physical Activity in Healthcare SIG will be launched at this workshop. The aim of this new ASPA SIG is to increase physical activity promotion in healthcare and is targeted at any researcher or practitioner working in this context. Speakers will describe tools (Moving Medicine) and programs (parkrun) that health professionals can use to promote physical activity within their clinical setting. The session will conclude with a panel discussion and an opportunity to express interest in joining the Physical Activity in Healthcare SIG committee.

Chairs: A/Prof Nicole Freene & Dr Sjaan Gomersall

Speakers:

  • Dr Hugh Seward is WorkSafe Victoria’s Medical and Recovery Director and a Sport and Exercise Physician, with a major interest in the promotion of Physical Activity in communities. He is chair of Active Geelong, a collaborative social impact initiative in the regional city of Geelong, in south east Australia. One of the programs involves working with the local medical community to build both interest and expertise in promoting and monitoring patient physical activity as a routine part of health care delivery. This includes facilitating the use of tools such as Moving Medicine which is the topic of the presentation.
  • Glen Turner is the Communications and Health & Wellbeing Manager for parkrun in the Asia Pacific region. parkruns are free community events that take place in hundreds of public outdoor places every Saturday morning, where people can get involved by walking or running a 5km course, volunteering or spectating. There is no time limit, no winners and nobody comes last – participants are celebrated for taking part regularly. Glen’s role is to help make parkrun as accessible as possible to as many people as possible, which includes collaborating with organisations who support people who are physically inactive and socially disconnected. One such intervention is the parkrun Practice Initiative, which empowers GPs and practice staff to talk to patients and colleagues about parkrun and to signpost people to their local parkrun – as walkers, joggers, volunteers and spectators.
