Travel to/from Newcastle
Flights
Sydney Airport is the closest major international hub (approximately 2.5 hours by car or 3 hours by train). It is also possible to fly into other major international hubs (e.g., Brisbane, Melbourne or Adelaide) and to take a connecting domestic flight to Newcastle Airport (25-minute drive or 40-minute bus ride from Newcastle CBD).
Train
Trains run regularly to/from Newcastle Interchange, connecting to the suburbs and Sydney using either the Hunter Line or Newcastle and Central Coast Line. TrainLink’s inter-city services also connect Newcastle to Sydney, Brisbane and other regional cities via Broadmeadow station.
Getting around Newcastle
Public transport
Newcastle Interchange is the main public transport hub within the city and links the major rail, light rail, and bus networks. Itโs easy to find your way around with public transport via Google Maps or using the Trip Planner on the NSW Transport app or website. All public transport can be paid for by “tapping” on/off with your bank card or phone wallet.
Light rail (tram)
The light rail system connects the CBD, running between Newcastle Interchange and Newcastle East. The 2.7km line stops at locations such as Civic Theatre/City Hall, Queens Wharf, and the iconic Newcastle Beach.
Bus
Buses run regularly around the city centre and connect with the suburbs and key locations including University of Newcastle, McDonald Jones Stadium and John Hunter Hospital, as well as shopping centres and parks.
Taxi
13cabs is the main taxi service in Newcastle while Uber and DiDi are the main app-based rideshare providers. All are generally plentiful within the CBD and surrounding suburbs. 13cabs and Ubers can also be pre-booked in advance.
